Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Panic Disorder

Abstract
in order to introduce the cognitive-behavioral therapy of panic disorder, the author reviewed the literatures on this therapy and reported 5 cases improved by this approach. Cognitive therapists are interested in dysfunctional information
processing
especially automatic thought and false belief incorporated in schema. In a cognitive conceptualization, the panic attacks occur when the physical symptoms and sensations, which may or may not themselves be related to anxiety, are interpreted s
catastrophic ones and taken on exaggerated, negative meaning for the individual. In the cognitive-behavioral therapy, the cognitive approach incorporates the theories and the treatment methods of the behavioral theory such as graded task
assignment:
exposure and activity scheduling.
The author reported 5 cases of panic disorders satisfactory treated with cognitive-behavioral treatment combined with pharmacotherapy.
The author hopes that the well controlled study on the cognitive-behavioral therapy of panic disorder to be started in Korea.
